Don’t Take The Vista del Lago exit……

May 22, 2010

We were passing the “Vista del Lago” exit …off of the Grapevine…on Highway 5 coming down from Yosemite…when Doris said….in talking about a friend she had not heard from in Mexico for quite awhile…

….she said it smiling…”You KNOW we WILL not be around for much longer…” (they are in their 80’s)

it hit me like THUNDERBOLT…as I cannot imagine life without them…as they are my oldest friends…..

one just assumes people who are close to you…with whom you bicker and discuss and laugh…… will be around forever……

it made me think of the theme from “Somewhere In Time” that Tom Bopp played on the piano last night at the Wawona Hotel in Yosemite….in the cocktail parlor…a song that Jim had requested….the song for NO reason just brought me to tears when I looked at Doris….she had told me years ago about it….

it was quite a wonderful evening as Tom – who must be in his 50’s…has this Unbelievable Talent – he knows all the old show themes, tunes, who composed them – who sang them and what Great Composer they stole the song from….he can segue from one song….and blend another composer’s bit into what he is playing…and smiles secretly to see if anyone catches it…..

Jim was an actor – producer – in New York and Hollywood back when THE STUDIOS MADE those wonderful old WONDERFUL movies that are NOW classics..was close friends with all THE people back then…..like Busby Berkeley…whose works he has the rights to…..

Doris worked in the business with Technicolor – she has had a few husbands..to whom she was devoted…..but she and Jimmy knew each other back when Doris was 19 ….they did not marry until like 7 years ago…..it was Kismet….

Doris is drop dead gorgeous for an 80 year old…well so is Jim….so you can imagine what they looked like in their 20’s …

their handyman was fixing their john last week and noticed a picture on the wall and asked Doris who the Gorgeous Couple were…Doris said well US!!! he looked at her and said “What Happened”……Doris laughed and said “Age”

Doris is a TOTALLY refreshingly honest person like my friend Michelle…..

We went to Yosemite last September for my birthday and their 6th Anniversary…and stayed at the Wawona Hotel…which is a gem…it is NOT in the valley where everything else is – like the overrated Ahwahnee is ….half the cost….and built before the valley was developed…..such such wonderful old charm and overweight help….

we stayed this time in the only cottage that survived the fire back in the 1870’s…Clark Cottage…quite wonderful ….

..though they had not made up our rooms by 2 PM.yesterday……Jimmy went to complain…and they told him ..well we try to have the rooms made up by 5…which made his mouth drop as he is use to New York City …where rooms are made up by 1 PM at the latest……the Wawona has its own wonderfully slow pace…..Miss Doris wanted to barge into the dining room this morning at 7 of 7 …this one server told her sternly NO…we open at 7 …not 7 of 7

back in Sept we took a bus tour that took you from the Valley to the Heights looking down on the valley and across at Half Dome ….it was quite wonderful except – well Miss Doris and I sat directly behind the bus driver …and he had not showered or deoderized his armpits…it was a HOT day…and every time he got animated and rest his left arm to hang his hand above his window…well the smell was just AWFUL!!!! so much so that Doris started to gag and I could NOT help but laugh……and laugh….and this was a two hour bus trip…

THIS time we saw the falls that were not falling last fall as they had all dried up…..and we went in and saw the GIANT Seguoias (sp?
which can live to 3,000 years old…something that I did not know…the oldest tree there is 2,700 years old……there was still snow on the ground…and it was supposed to snow tonight…a REALLY late spring……

I had rented a “full size” car from Enterprise and expected the gorgeous, chic, black, luxurious car we had back in September…well when I got to the rental joint on the Sunset Strip…(they picked me up at home)…they told me I could wait another half hour or take what they had….an unwashed…no gas in the tank…clown car (very small) …I don’t pay ANY attention to cars…but think this was a Chevy’s HHR…which I had never noticed before or heard of…..

I should have waited for whatever was being washed as…this was a VERY uncomfortable car…like when I got to Yosemite…well there the highway just zigs and zags all over the mountains..one is ALWAYS Braking…..and this brake pedal is made for a person who has like a size 12 shoes…as it hit the tip of my foot….rather than the ball…..something I have NEVER encountered before…I kept electronically adjusting my seat…but shoot that does NOT adjust the size of my foot….

and then THIS car …the steering column …when you went around curves and were braking.. would make this noise like someone shaking a wonderful dried African gourd VERY fast…it was not click it was like dried seeds in a gourd….well I kept praying that the steering column was NOT about to fall apart and send us shooting into the gorge 1000 feet below us….

(Doris Thanked me for not sharing this info until I dropped them off home at their door…)

We truly had a WONDERFUL weekend…enjoyed the heady scent of the Sequoias …ate well, drank well, and most importantly got mad ..well I at Jimmy who kept asking if I WAS OK….and laughed at how we each are…..I LOVE them to death…they are TOTALLY irreplacable!!!!!

If you find someone YOU LOVE……………. NEVER LET THEM GO….(sound like an old song…Lerner and Lowe??? Cole Porter??? no Rogers and Hamerstein………as THEY won’t be there forever…..
