Treasure the Women In Your Life!!!!

January 8, 2011

Heard from my last roommate Maria a few days ago
….due to weather it took her 4 days to get to her family’s residence from here in LA to Bulgaria…whereas her sister in London who was supposed to get there a few days later got there before her…
she is eagerly looking forward to her teaching job in Qatar….she left (hopefully yesterday from Bulgaria…but she said the airport at Sophia is OFTEN fogged in…and she has to change planes in Athens as there are no direct flights from Bulgaria to Qatar)
she was the first roommate I had that was female…and I do miss her….she left me a LARGE glass cylinder with bulbs in it set in gravel…she said When you see them flower you will think of me…as Red is my favorite color….
they were Amaryllises….they were BRILLIANT…and just faded yesterday…..
There is a faucet in her bathroom….(there are two sinks)…that has not worked like forever….I have put off calling the plumber…. I could NOT get it wrenched off the sink …but TODAY…I thought…bloody Hell….DO GIVE IT a TRY…..so with everything but the wrong wrench I attacked it with WD40….and then after almost stripping the damn thing….I realized I HAD to go to Home Depot to get a proper wrench…..
so I motored over there and pulled in through the ever increasing throng  of Mexicans…(what has happened with other unemployed men…is it ONLY the Mexicans that look for work??)
I found wonderful wrenches…I so do love a Hardware Store…and miss Laurel Hardware’s demise a couple of years ago….which Uncle Sumner introduced me to……. Marty had opened it the year I was born – 1946….and eventually  handed it over to his son-in-law Mike. like 10 years ago…….who due to increased rent had to give it up two years ago….(sigh)…..
.they were the OLD school of people …where you could just go and just chat about life….I knew ALL the employees….knew about Mike’s interest in flying small remote planes…there was and probably still is an Event held once a year where he went to in  Ohio – a very rich man with a landing strip on his own property..invited people from all over the world to come and fly their remote controlled planes…..for free…(I had NO idea that SO many people were into remote controlled planes)…
anyway…when I FINALLY got the faucet out…after using some “BLASTER – UNLOCK THE BOLTS”…Deadly spray…I realized that it is not like the faucets I was use to …it did NOT have a WASHER….it was well weird….so I took off my gas mask and disposable nurse’s gloves and motored over to Koontz Hardware …which DOES have customer friendly service…..tho a tad more expensive…than Home Depot….
I gave the old “stem” it is called…to  a man in the plumbing area…he turned it around in his hands …and said “Harden”…and then went up two stories on a ladder and came back …and said I think this will work…but if it does not …make sure you do not mar it..as you will not be able to return it…
it cost $65.00 – which kind of shocked me for a small plumbing part…
as I was leaving….
this man came up whom I  vaguely recognized…it took me all of 3 seconds to realize it was Mike …the old owner of Laurel Hardware..I said what in the Hell are you doing here…he said Rob… I had counted on Laurel Hardware being my retirement…..but after the rent increase and being off for 2 years I financially had to go back to work…and was lucky that Koontz hired me…Gene and (another guy that use to work at Laurel)…have been here for two years….
I was saddened that he DID not achieve the financial freedom he wanted  after so many years…….he has two wonderful children with kids…….his daughter became  an ULTRA Orthodox Jew and moved to a Kibbutz in Israel and would have nothing to do with her parents… until a few years ago…..
I went on to the Landmark to see my favorite girl at “Westside Tavern”….before seeing the movie “True Grit”….which truly is quite wonderful…..the man who wrote the original book…SURE knew how to use the English language….
I came home hours later…..VERY CONTENT …well I seldom am not…since I have to deal ONLY with myself……
I tried out the new stem ..Praise Mother Teresa(sp?)…it fit…but since it cost $65.00…I went online and found the same one for $23.00…so will be returning to Koontz tomorrow….
and then I heard from my bro Rick …that one of Mom’s best friends died……she was an IMPOSING figure in my life..as she was the First Woman that WAS a WOMAN….TOTALLY SECURE in her womanhood…did NOT cowtow to anyone…a model of the way I ALWAYS felt women should be…(and all of this was infulenced by Sophia Loren in an Italian 1960  movie “La Ciociara” translated to “Two Women” …..where I UNDERSTOOD …and admired STRONG women…)
I sent the enclosed email to Rick:
WOW…..
Thanks Rick…how sad the old guard is almost gone…
walking up that  circular glass staircase to the stars…
I look at the night skies…and hear their laughter..”Begin The Bequine” is playing…….as  ice tinkles in the cocktail glasses…..
……………..a Pooh sigh!!!……………………..
Mrs Gibson, as I always called her was a very influential person in my life – intimidating – I thought of her as gruff – more manly than feminine –
she had more balls than a lot of men of that generation…..
she was the FIRST strong woman in my Life…..the model for all women I met later and admired ….standing up to the idiosyncrasies of crazed testosterone driven men…
….another Pooh sigh!!!!!!
I will miss her and Sherman (the snake)…..
but then nothing good is EVER lost…it stays part of us ….and becomes part of our character….

xxRob
