Doris Day Parking

July 15, 2011

I woke up at 6:37  – late for me -stared at my walls and  was bugged by the blue masking tape that ran all over ….

I had started to repaint my bedroom the July 4th weekend….the “Yellow Meadows of Daffodils” is finished….

but the “Swiss Coffee” white – the bookcases – the built-in desk – the molding …are NOT……

I rolled over in bed slightly mad….

wanting to  go back to that wonderful dream where  I was  milking the Swiss Cows at Forest Lodge…their ears were sooo soft …as were their soft  whitey haired udders……

but I was bothered by THAT blue tape….

so got the fuck up out of bed……turned on MSNBC – CNN – ABC – all so boring with the fucking Republicans refusing to budge from their economic  sandpit…and what’s her name being about to be released from jail….Kaycee or is it Jaycee….and how some woman that looked like her was attacked …….

switched the channel to taped shows of  Charlie Rose from this past week…but all he was talking about was the economy which I had already had enough of……deleted them….and went downstairs to pick up the NY and LA Times…was glad that the outdoor sprinklers had not gone on this AM……

I have two Gay friends who are flying to Vermont to get married….as Angel – who is/was a Mormon was fired from his job which he has had  for 10 years…. with the Mormon Church…due to the fact that he is an “illegal” – which they (the Mormons)…. have known since he started working for them …the fact that he is gay they did NOT know about ……

Their attorney told them they would have a better chance of changing his status if they were married……so thus they are flying back to a Gay B&B in Woodbury Vermont….I contacted one of the owners and asked if I could find the name of a florist to send them an arrangement for their room and 2 boutonniere’s (sp?)…..and got the name of this wonderful Nina….with whom I have corresponded by email….

there was just something about corresponding with her that made me realize what a quiet wonderful homey  town Woodbury must be compared to Los Angeles….as well her price was like 75 bucks…which here would have been $300…. I told her to make the flowers abit more wonderful and I would pay $125.00.

I could hear the gasp over the wires…as she emailed back  “Rob – you are SUCH a wonderful friend”…..which made me feel good..for a nano-second……when I realized that I AM NOT….

a “good friend” was WHAT I was back in my Pollyanna (sp?) stage…before I  found myself….

today I just live for MYSELF….yet I would NOT…..be one of those men who trampled women and children to get on to the last lifeboat of the Titanic….it is/was just SOOO wrong!!!

I have organized a wedding dinner party here for Angel and Dave with our gay family of 7 – at our favorite restaurant (d’Etolie)… in West Hollywood…there are tables that spill out onto the sidewalk which is a wonderful place to view all the foot traffic….that drifts by from bar and club to club and bar as the night darkens….

so I HAD to put off painting …and getting rid of that ghastly blue masking tape until later…

to go in hunt of a wedding cake…I had actually ordered a 2 man wedding topper from Rhode Island…..so I went to Yelp online…to search….

well the “bakery” close to me was just down on Beverly Blvd….I motored down there….found a Doris Day parking spot

(oh for you straights “Doris Day Parking” is when like in her movies ..you drive up in her LARGE 1950’s convertible and AUTOMATICALLY find a place IMMEDIATELY in front of the place….turn the wheel only once backing up and you are set…)…

.well the place was less of a bakery and more of a glorified Starbucks…cakes ..sandwiches …brioches…baguettes…stuffed with everything …..seating inside and out with EVERYONE on their wi-fi system…the majority seemed to be on iPads….which some day I plan to get….

the girl behind the counter with her hair wound a bit too tight asked me what I wanted…and when I said a wedding cake she looked at me like I had asked her for architectural  plans of  the Golden Gate Bridge…she said well do you want one of our cakes…and I thought to myself well why in the fuck do you think I am here…..I said YES a wedding cake…she scowled and looked around the “Bakery”….and there was a girl on a bar stool…sitting around a circular counter that ran around these palms in the middle…..

well I went and asked this VERY white girl…

( I so wanted a Black woman at the moment..as they always understand my craziness )…..

if I could order a wedding cake….she said well what do you have in mind…I said well the smallest two tier (I always feel a wedding cake HAS to be tiered)

…she looked doubtful …and went behind the counter and pulled out a book of pictures….and said…well the cheapest is $200 and then we charge for set up and delivery of a 2 tiered cake….which we HAVE to deliver as we have to set up the two tiers …..and then there  is the cost of the florist…and I said well online you have flowers on the cake..she said yes…they are NOT frosting they are put there by our florist ….

I sighed and dragged my ass with my  porcelain two  groom cake topper  out of THAT joint…

went back online and found what was the first choice by Yelpers … ….this bakery on Robertson Blvd..”Rosebud”…which I had put off..as parking is a bitch ESPECIALLY there….but guess what…

Doris Day Parking again………

I immediately  loved the outside of the place as it looked like it had existed before Starbucks had come into vogue …and it was ONLY a bakery….I should say Cakery…….I entered…and INSTANTLY  felt I had come home…as it was NOT ultra modern…was worn in a VERY good way…… had a warm smell of  bakery….there was this lingering flour powder in the air…..

a wonderful  white aproned (sp?) woman – who looked like a younger Blythe Danner (Gwen  Paltrow’s wonderful, talented  mother)…very lean and tall with curly blonde hair cut short……came out of the back ….. had this wonderful old wonderful charm……I felt I had known her forever…..

she was as  warm and DIRECT  as my wonderful  boss….I told her what I wanted…she said great.. she loved the two grooms I brought in for cake toppers …I asked her how long had her place been here…..she laughed and said well a bit longer than most things in this town ….24 years…..which made me like it more….

.she said very matter of factly our price starts at $300 – which made me menatally gasp….but then one has to consider the artistry…and then after she insisted I taste their 3 different wedding cakes…which I initially refused…as she said YOU have to…….

the one I picked just melted lightly on my  tongue like a Minnesotan  snow flake falling on Christmas Day…

….she said by the way since July is a slow month – we are giving 15% off…and then we also always give a coupon for a year from now…so rather than storing the wedding cake in their freezer …they can come down and get a  smaller fresh one…

I had forgotten the  old tradition of saving the wedding cake in the freezer until your first anniversay…don’t know WHERE that  comes from….but do remember my parents storing my sister’s wedding cake in our freezer in DC…which took up WAY too much room….

the electricity went out..Miss Havisham’s cake melted…….. spoiled…….. it was tossed in the bin WAY before the first anniversary …

Ms Rosebud asked what style I wanted…

I said well you are the artist….

she quietly…. hesitantly  said….. “Art Deco” .. since the grooms (cake topper)….are in their  black tuxes  –

I said well sure..

she said exuberantly ……..GREAT…I NEVER get to do Art Deco…..

as they always want white……..

I got back in my car…pulled away from my Doris Day parking spot …..

a warm smile on my lips……
