Laughter

August 17, 2012

Tonight “The Firm” as my group of friends have been called ….whom  I have known for eons..we all got together for drinks and dinner……at the Abbey

… Jim – my Uncle’s lover- I have known since I arrived in LA in 1969….

but tonight I ran into 2 men whom I have not seen in really many many years…

Terry who was a lover of my Best Friend…Jimbo who was murdered in 1998 in our apartment….

he HAS not aged…and has this delicious sense of humor…..that is infectious….I will never forget one of his expressions:

“Well YOU look as Fresh as a  newly  tossed salad”…..

he introduced us to the card  game “Knock”…which I loved back then but have not played since Jimbo’s death……and the guys that played it are/were so wonderful!!

and then when we all went to dinner at d’Etoile ..our usual fave restaurant….

Gerard came to our table….

well Gerard use to work at my Uncle’s lover Nicky’s restaurant “The Garden District” …which back then…in the 70’s and 80’s was THE Gay restaurant to go to….

Gerard …. HAS NOT aged in ….what 30 years…I was totally taken back…he is a wonderful guy….who had the fortune to be born Handsome…which can be a curse that I am thankful in looking back ..that I did not experience….

I have always admired him…and love him for the man he is….

The Garden District was always  full of wonderful ..wonderful guys….

My uncle never drank alone…but as Jim…his last lover has said…”he was NEVER alone”…as he use to go out for lunch/ Brunch..or dinner …..usually to the Garden District…well why not as he did not have to pay…as he had fronted the money  in it…

I will NEVER forget one Sunday….I joined Sumner at the Garden  …at noon…had brunch….which somehow segued (sp?)  into dinner…and at 2 AM  we had to leave…well we both were kind of inebriated ….

my uncle had this wonderful gift of laughter..and ability to tell wonderful stories….. ..and he got me laughing as we left the Garden….a tad after 2:30 AM

….I tripped on his cane…and fell into the gutter…and he fell on top of me….where upon we both  could not stop  laughing…until we realized we were bleeding….which made us laugh harder

we stumbled  back to The Garden…banged on the door…and I think Gerard let us in…and cleaned us up…..I do remember I was wearing white Levi’s…which had blood on them…

all of the white guys who worked at  the Garden  died frm  AIDS….one of the hardest periods in my Life…

the Hispanic   staff,  Nicky…and I did not.. … (I was never as promiscuous as most men are….due to identifying with Scarlet in Gone With The Wind……………(yeah so WHAT)….)

What I am saying is that it is truly amazing how the die are thrown…

for me to run into 2 very special guys from chapters ago, that I thought had been closed…

…is Truly Wonderful after all these years…

and I cannot WAIT to get my best friend Michelle and Jim to go play “Knock”…

as it was ALWAYS one of the Happiest points in my Life…

you did not have to prove anything…..just have a lot of quarters….

and Know How to ..

ENJOY LIFE and LAUGH at yourself!!!!
