Can You put a Price on YOUR Happiness…what is the value of a Fall Leaf?

January 5, 2013

I just had dinner at my favorite Thai restaurant….my Buddhist monk/waiter (whom I adore) …said he KNEW I was going to come tonight…and had his girlfriend make a Thai cookie for me…which he at first put near his bedroom door…then moved it to near the front door…as he was afraid he would forget it…..and then left his house and felt he had forgot something…went back and even then could not remember what it was….and yes he forgot the cookie……..

I then motored onto an art exhibit of one of my favorite artist ..Werc Alvarez (who started life as a graf artist)……his  work was being exhibited along with 4 other Chicano artist  that Cheech Marin has collected ……at a Gallery on Beverly……

….years ago I was smacked in the face by Werc’s  talent at the now defunct art Gallery downtown LA “Crewest”….but Werc’s  humor…his feeling for life…everyone of his works has such intense feeling in them…you have to study his pieces for a long time to see everything…and even then you really need him to show you things you have missed…(also  if I were  Chicano  it would help)……I am fortunate to own 3 of his works…..

I TOTALLY fell in love with one piece ….”Ride On 2012”…(I think was the title)…if I get a few bucks ahead I will definitely buy it…though I think it might go tonight as a lot of people were studying it….

There is something about an emotional feeling that you cannot put a price on….and that is what I feel about Werc’s art…….it APPEAlS to ME…and THAT is ALL that matters…

I remember an old friend Peggy Fears…who saved her dollars way back when she was a Follies girl on Broadway….she was not paid much but she fell in love with Salvador Dali’s work…..and scrimped and saved and bought the largest Dali I have ever seen…it covered one whole wall of her Los Angeles living room….when I met her 40 years later in the 70’s….I said “Peggy that must be worth a fortune”….she said “Robby …..I bought this before Dali became so famous….saved my dollars…and had to rent a storeroom for it as it would not fit in my tiny walk up flat in New York.   When I look at it I don’t see money…I see an emotion that only I feel…and it makes me smile….and extremely happy…and NO Money will  ever be able to  buy that for me…”

This reminds me of a girlfriend….who was visiting Paris in the Fall …and walked through the Bois de Boulogne as the leaves were falling…she met this handsome , sensuous  man….she fell in love with him…they had a steamy passionate affair that long long weekend…….they knew it  could not last   as they both were  married….

One day after her return to Manhattan…she received in the mail a box with no return address  from Paris…

It was Full of Fall Leaves….she crumpled to  her knees  in tears…………….

You understandcomprehendseize why an artist creates. It is the sacred/scared/sacred moment when your humanity rises above the horizon. And, you hover breathing in the ecstacy and the terror of the epiphany, the MOMENT when all your senses are heralded at once. Alive. Joy. A live joy.

    Love is,
    xC
