Treasures In Our Life

October 26, 2013

Today was ONE of those days…..

I always go out every Saturday to the Farmer’s Market in Santa Monica … for my Red Butter Lettuce, my Japanese Tomatoes, and my Blueberries and Strawberries for the next week…..

Last weekend I was in Palm Springs so did not have the ability to go out there….so ended up going to Whole Foods…….and MAN can you tell the difference when you tear the lettuce apart to wash it….

it is SO much limper than a head of lettuce picked yesterday…which lasts twice as long …

and Whole Foods sort of shocked me as their Blue Berries come from New Zealand..(sp?)..whereas Santa Barbara is next door….think of the cost of flying those berries here..

the fog was thick in LA this morning as I motored out…and put my fog lights on for the first time EVER in my Mon’s old 98 Subaru………as you could not see 3 cars ahead of you….

but when you got to the beach it lifted suddenly….I was afraid my farmers would have been impacted by the fog…but Sonia said she had no problem coming down the coast….

She only had 4 heads of Red Butter Lettuce left …which are/were HUGE ….she said Robert…you got the last for this season…..

as I was leaving I said “Have A Good Day!!!”….she said “well the same to you…but it is up to YOU to MAKE it so”……which put a smile on my face……

I got back home and washed my lettuce, for the next two weeks, hulled my strawberries..as I am going to Palm Spring next weekend ….

my Wonderful roommate (an actress on the edge of BEING the next “IT” girl.)… had been up…when I left….was in the Living Room…reading and then playing so softly on her key board….she HAS such a wonderful Voice!!!!

we have always respected each other’s privacy…so I said nothing to her…nor she to me…as her lover Zach was snoring in her bed..the floor above……

I then went down to the Beverly Center to “See” to pick up my new eye glasses…that are large horn rimmed rounds…sort of Harry Pottersish but larger…more Edith Head…the fabulous costume designer for MGM back in the day…unfortunately I cannot tie the hair I have left…into a bun like she did…

two of my friends Chris and Tim own the house she had in Palm Springs ..with it’s wonderful safe in their bedroom…which is behind a wonderful small door….where Hobbits live…..

… I bought the glasses to hide my wrinkled face…..I don’t know if I like them or not….tried smiling with them on….which scared me as ALL of my wrinkles pop out…tried a half smile……DOES NOT work!!!

Man can’t I wear a Burka.???….

anyone on Grinder wear a burka?????
well not my cup of tea anyway….

Then as I motored to see Robert Redford’s movie “Lost”…found out I had insulted one of my best and dearest friends…unintentionally ….my comprehension of his telegraphed message last night….I totally misconstrued…..and being a Libra…my scales have gone hay wire….hopefully some day he will forgive me…..

Then that F.ing movie..”All Is Lost”…..

which I think is a downer Title…

and .WHY is a 77 year old WHITE…Entitled man sailing alone…in the Indian Ocean….I mean the only word Redford utters in the movie is FUUCCCKKK…which is the way I felt half way through it

….and then the director LOVES underwater shots of the bottom of boats…all taken from the same angle….and the Ocean is either Totally stormy or as smooth as glass….

and I, having been shipwrecked once back in 1964 on an island in the Greek Aegean Sea …St Georgious (sp?) …

the sea might be smooth for one day…but there are ALWAY swells…

we got saved on that deserted island…that had been occupied by the Germans in WWII as there was a large tank with the words “Drink (sp?) Wasser” written on it….. by a freighter..passing by on its way to Turkey…as we used our tin mirrors to send SOS signals….the freighter stopped WAY out THERE…and sent in a man in a large row boat…he picked us up…and pulled our battered sail boat out to the freighter…they had a crane that lifted our boat onto their deck…

looking back today…I am AMAZED …at being saved…

(Spoiler Alert if you are going to see ALL Is Lost….don’t read any further)

and the thing Redford did as he was “shipwrecked”…NO human would do..to attract attention to a passing ship ..all just too unbelievable for this kid…..I mean he set his life raft aflame….and sank into the depths of the ocean for like 5 minutes…(same angle shot for photoing that had been used 4 times before)…..and then a hand appeared…to save him….and THAT was IT……the end of the movie

you will all love the movie after my explosion….as usually if I read a bad review I end up Loving the play…or movie

just now I went to El Coyote for dinner with my oldest friend..he is breathing on 90….(December 11th)….it is always so soo Wonderful being with him….he is a wonderful story teller..and looks 49…his mind is soo sharp….we had several Gold Cadillac Margaritas….and I should have had a tape recorder…as I wanted to know what he envisions when he thinks about his mother…and his grandmother

…his mother was married twice…they were dirt poor…her first husband died…but they produced one son…Jim’s older brother who is now passed on…and then she married this well to do alcoholic with whom she had my 90 year old friend Jim…and his sister who left at a very young age…

Jim’s mother ended up sending her husband back to His mother…and raised her kids alone in Taft California…..took in wash to support them

but WHAT Jim did with his Life is just amazing!!!

from being a “roust-about” in the Oil fields around Taft….to owing the only record store in Taft (this is WAY before tapes or CD’s or iTunes)…to running the projector in the only movie theatre in Taft…the old reels were VERY flammable back then…..

to producing plays and movies …he was a close friend of the Coutess Lily Gerinni.(sp?)… he traveled in Europe with her ..she knew everyone back then…

I have to be quite honest but Jim at 90 is a VERY handsome man…back then ….well women and men would die to know him…

Jim knew Rock Hudson his studio arranged wife the lesbian Phyllis Gates…Jim knew Tab Hunter…well Jim knew everyone…he lived in NY City …when he had not much money…..I SOO want to record his memories…

Jim LIVED!!! as Agnes Gooch said in the first Auntie Mame movie with Roslyn Russell (sp?)

he is an Amazing Man…who is totally selfless…..

I Love him to death….

if you know a man or woman born before the net…

GRAB them and record their stories!!!!

As they are an irreplaceable Treasure!!!

Robby, DO write Jim’s bio — you would be great at recording his memories and giving them your own special flare! I already want to know more about him. Your description of the farmers market and the difference in the produce — and people – betwen there and “Whole Paycheck” is also very vivid. oxoxo
