Age Is The Best

July 27, 2014

This was a weekend dedicated to “Old Things”…………..

It started out by having dinner with my oldest friend in Age…Jimmy Terry who is breathing on 91….he just always amazes me by his good physical health and his sharp mind….we went to his fave..”El Coyote”…a Mexican restaurant he has been going to since like the 50’s…..

he always enters the restaurant by saying “I hear you cook a good ‘Moo Goo Gai Pan”….

when he first said it years ago….the hostess looked at him as if he was crazy…with all these question marks floating above her head…

this time when we entered she said “Oh we are all out of Moo Goo Gai Pan”…..

Jimmy said “WELL!!!” “I guess we are going to have to go to another Chinese restaurant then…”

being in his company is such a pleasure as he talks about the old days and how life was back then….in the 30’s…the 40’s….

I taped our talk….which I am so thrilled to have….as it brings in the feeling and atmosphere of one who lived back then….during the dust bowl ….that Steinbeck captured in “Of Mice And Men” …….

the next day was to take my dear and oldest friend (in longevity)…James Arthur…..he said he had not been able to walk for a week …as the tops of his feet were swollen…and it was hard to walk as far as the bath…… thought he had caught his feet in the sheets that caused this frivolity…..

well we motored down to his doctor…which I assumed was not a far distance…WELL…it is totally downtown LA….near Dodger Stadium….beyond Echo Park…next to “Filipino Town”….

I could NOT believe he has a “reputable” doctor who would have an office down here…..the Modi family has been his doctors for over 30 years…..their office is in a building they own…not far from their God Awful “Loving Care” home on Virgil…that I visited Jim in for many a month…as he was recouping from a broken shoulder ….their customers are basically Welfare and Med-Cal people…….

The office building sits under the Mexican Motel “Paradise”…..

when I entered the office…I was transported to the 3rd World….there is NO Air Conditioning..and it was 91 outside……..furniture designed by the Salvation Army….some of the pillows on the sofas matched other chairs….all of the legs of the furniture looked like they just came from the Ukraine….totally mismatched styles….

my project this fall is to get Jim off the mickey mouse insurance company he has been with for 30 years to Blue Cross or Blue Shield …and get him out of the Modi machine..so he can go to a decent hospital….and end his final days in something more becoming…….of him….which I hope is years after I go…….not only because he is a treasure in my life…but I DO NOT want to have to clean out his apartment……

the weekend progressed to fix the old things that have stopped working …my cable box…my cell phone….my frig/freezer….my car – I will deal with tomorrow…..as the starter is going out …….

this year I have already had to have a crane put a new AC/Heating unit on the roof…had to replace my computer and the printer…my washing machine broke down…as did my dishwasher..the faucet in my kitchen sprang a leak…that I did not know about until my cleaning lady pointed it out…probably 6 weeks after….as mold had built up under the sink

my wonderful roommate Meg said…ohhh it is our ghost in this house….which made me think of the wonderful movie I saw yesterday…”Magic In The Moonlight”….I totally loved …tho the critics hated it…but the period is one of my favorites

…in the movie Colin Firth is to debunk a medium played by Emma Stone….I loved the music…the south of France….the acerbic witty lines that Collin is given to speak….

but getting back to Reality and MY weekend….

OLD things do wear out and have to be fixed…as I have lived here for 15 years….

I went to the beach today to read the Sunday NY Times….to gaze across the grey – cloud covered ocean….

my cyclist did not turn up…it has been over a year…

a young Indian family sat next to me…she was skyping with someone (in India???) on her cell…her husband was talking on his…as their 5 year old son was running all over the place …screaming “I WANT TO GO TO THE BEACH”……he really needed a soccer (or football) ball to unwind…wish I had brought mine in my back pack….

I had planned to walk on the beach for several hours…but thought I better see if I could leave my car at my mechanic…so left earlier than planned

toddled down to the Idiot…to see Junior…the chef…..he was not there…some ugly guy with a hairnet on and tons of tats…so I thought he had taken the day off…I got immersed in the “Style” section of the NYT….an article “Where Snarl Meets Roar”…the airport in the Hamptons…now has quite a few more helicopters arriving and leaving…causing tons of noise…and residents are in an uproar…..as there NOW is a service like Uber for helicopters…..called “Blade”….

the airport use to be frequented only by the 1 percenters…but now with Blade…is frequented by the 2 percenters (those that wish they were 1%)…….

Junior popped up to shake my hand….we talked about our week…I asked how his girl friend was…he said fine…..I asked him how long they had been together…(she makes him wear a ring on his left hand to say he is TAKEN)…..he said 5 years…I asked if he had saved a lot of money…since he works 3 jobs…he laughed and said “no”….”my girl friend has not had a job in several years”…..gather she studied to be a beautician…and is still waiting by the telephone as she devours chocolates for “THEM” to call her……

i said Junior it is none of my business…relationships are a safe harbor and difficult…but at the end of the day …YOU have to think of yourself……

He went back to scrambling eggs with his lips pursed……..

I said I did not mean to upset you…but in Life…we ALL have to contribute to each other…we can’t sit on the side…and expect IT to come to us……

When I asked the Russian technician who came to fix my frig…. if he was Ukrainian. ….he laughed and said NO…then went on to say

“IT is ALL About Money….” meaning the situation in the Ukraine………

He said “You have a Good Frig…as it is Old …it has two motors….a timer….simple…today …everything More complicated…computers…..”

I in my Wisdom…smiled….

and said “Yes Age is the Best!!!”
