Maybe This Time……

July 18, 2014

Today was a wonderful day until I started to bike home….when it seemed everyone was trying to run me down……

I got home only to get into my car to do the weekly mundane shopping…..

But every car that could back up out of a driveway…did it…

and those who drove slower than Jesus on his mule ..well they were ahead of me……

You know..or I DO…there are just certain days when things do not go as well as one would like

as I have had days where I get nothing but green lights and the traffic is nonexistent and I can fly from my house to the beach in 20 minutes..well this is at 7:25 on a Saturday morn …

…as my sister would say…”Mercury must be in retrograde”….which I have always paused, only for a nano-second,….. to wonder what in the Hell that means…..

but as I motored to Trader Joe’s …I thought Mercury Must Certainly be in Retrograde….

and then the parking structure for TJ’s on Sunset is …well I hate it…as they have these damn speed bumps..(as though one could let their Lamborghini loose)……which I am sure knocks all of the air out of my tires…as one has to go down 2 floors for TJ’s parking….and then elevator up…in their old “33” vinyl covered walls elevator….

well when I got out of TJ’s I elevatored down with my validated parking ticket…..

I motored up two floors..again running over those God damn awful speed bumps………and inserted my ticket…(the booths with helpers disappeared long ago with the printed yellow pages)….well the damn machine spat my ticket out so fast it hit my face… stunned…I inserted it again..well it shot it down under the car…so with furiously looking cars behind me I got out of my car.. down on my knees…retrieved the bloody ticket….

and standing in front of the machine..re-inserted it many a time….to no avail…

I did not have my glasses on…and pushed every button I could see on the machine…..

anyway I obviously did get out of there…..as this is too much to be able to write on a cell phone….

After a few relaxing brews at home…..and watching this week’s (taped) episode of “Welcome To Sweden” with Greg Poehler ..

which made me remember how wonderful the sing song pattern of Nordic talk is…and reminded me of our marvelous Norwegian house keeper Lisa…and her yet to be discovered pedophile husband Per…..this was at our house in DC in the 60’s

……I decided to walk up the street to LaLa’s…….to commiserate with Claudio about Argentina loss in the World Cup….he kept saying “Messi performed miserably”…..our conversations are a tad better than the ones I have with my wonderful housekeeper who has been with me for over 30 years…through 4 lovers…..her husband has gone blind now due to diabetes…and she is the sole bread winner………………

Claudio and I never stop for breath in talking to each other…so we don’t really listen to each other

But as I was walking out of my room…I had the extremely special occasion of hearing my beautifully gifted roommate singing….

“Maybe this time…” from “Cabaret”..

.my other wonderful roommate Zach….her lover…I encountered in the Living Room…he said he had been banished as Meg was putting together a tape for an audition……well I KNOW She Will Get the Part…..it is like KNOWING Mercury is in Retrograde…..

they BOTH are SOO talented…..

I NEVER knew Meg had such a sensuously strong voice…as the few bars I heard…well it was a cross between the soft caressing way the beautiful Natasha Richardson sang it….and the more explosive way Liza sings it…..it is such a remarkable voice!!!!

I soo admired Natasha…(from THE (British)…. Richardson family) in all the roles she played…..have always loved her husband Liam Neeson…and was totally devastated when she died of a brain aneuyersm on the ski slopes…what a loss….

as I ambled up the block…this all made me think of the Wonderful Elaine Stritch…whom I was lucky enough to see at the Cafe Carlyle …many many moons ago…she was with Bobby Short on the piano…..I was with my Mom and Aunt Mimi…….

it always amazed me that Elaine said she was ALWAYS insecure…before appearing in front of an audience…and would have to have a hefty drink before each show.. and one in the middle…and then several at the end……

I guess it is not funny or odd…but what the feelings or insecurities that are impressed on us as young children…REALLY do stay with us throughout our lives….

It came home after reading Edward St Aubyn’s “Melrose Quintet”….he was sexually abused for many years by his father….I was kicked in the balls daily by Eddie Stowe and his goons at St Albans…rolled down stairs in a trash can………

when St Aubyn complained to his mother …saying he had been raped…she acted like it was quite normal…and merely answered back..saying “Oh So have I…that’s how I had you…”

He writes…well the way I know a few people talk…with such wit, acerbity, and humor…it happens SO FAST..

in a snap of two fingers…you are in awe …speechless and rolling on the floor with laughter…and Envy….

the more I amble around my neighborhood…I SOO hope it never changes…..

as you have everything in one story buildings from the tattoo parlors, the sex shops, vape shops, poster shops, clothing and boot shops….hat shops…plus the comedy theatre that is responsible for many comedians existence..”The Groundlings Theatre”..which has been on Melrose since 1975….and I was thrilled to hear they had bought the building across the street recently for more classrooms…

the scent of the street is it’s own…a combination of the foods, the sweat….the smiles,,,the clouds…..

and you don’t say….”maybe this time”…

you smile as Elaine Stritch would…

knowing …

This Time is HERE!!!

As always Robby, thanks for sharing. I have been down with a cold/sinus infection since 7/11, but finally feeling better. Also, one of my cats had a seizure on 7/13 so have been going through vet appointments to figure out cause; next one is 7/29. Uncle Jimmy has been calling daily to check on us. Danny is a great nurse, but you know he’d rather play doctor. 🙂 Take care and hope to see you soon. Love, Diana
