Shock

October 4, 2014

Years ago I was working unhappily on a dude ranch in Montana..

that my father had sent me to

…as he felt it would build “character”……

found myself walking forlornly across a field….wondering what was the point of my life..

…I felt useless and might as well be dead…..

I reached a fence ..well it was several wires…that enclosed this field….I did not know it was electrified….I grabbed it …to climb over …and got an electric shock that threw me unconsciously back……

I woke up several seconds later…and it was the first time I appreciated the smell of the grass….the gathering twilight….and the rising Full Moon

I just lunched with an old friend…someone I have always loved…

we have not seen each other in months….almost a year…..we have that deep innate friendship where we ARE ALWAYS there for each other but don’t have to see or talk for months….it is a rare thing in this Facebook age…

Three weeks ago…he was supposed to meet me and my roommates for lunch….he did not show up…or call…which is VERY unlike him…

He awoke to find himself in a hospital room…his nephew at his bedside……that he had been there for a week …..

he was told he had been technically dead for several hours….he has no idea what happened to him….the last thing he remembers was he was in a bar….

…..he was bruised….a gash to the head……found unconscious on the street………….

six degrees of Separation…his nurse turned out to be the mother of one his students….who totally admired what he had done for her son…..and attended to his needs like a mother………….

he is embarrassed by the whole thing…and that his family (except for his 82 year old mother)….found out that he is Gay…as he felt they had never known…..

he as a child was the youngest of like 12 … pushed by his mother to cross the border illegally to find a better life in the US…as they came from total poverty…..

his brothers were field workers up in Fresno where most of them still live…..

he lived with one brother and then another as he went through school….he had to walk 4 miles to school…and started working at McDonald’s to save up to buy a bike so he did not have to walk to school……

he applied for several scholarships…which he got and was able to put himself through college…

he became a teacher…one of the best Hollywood High ever has seen…..and it was during this period that he became my roommate….for several years…..

he moved out after buying a condo in downtown LA when it was beginning to transform itself….and then was able to buy a second one……their value has gone up so much since then

he said his near death experience made him wake up to the intenseness and beauty of Life….to appreciate what he has been given …..and to give back more……..

I have always admired and loved him…just for his persistence…that started many many years ago when his dear mother pushed him to cross the border…..

he got his Masters in Psychology…still loves teaching….and his method …years ago he told me was based on singing, dancing and WHAT he was curious about as a kid…..

he is now working on an app…that I KNOW will be a success….it is basically what a kid would use to help them in speaking and enjoying Life…….

he is doing this basically to help kids struggling…..as he did…..and to make money to help his very large family……he does not seek riches for himself other than the smile on a nephew’s face…..

the thing that amazes me is that he had does not Realize what a Unique, Wonderful person he is…..

Sometimes it takes a Shock….to Focus one…….

Sharing your writing with my sister Mary Ellen. She says you should write a book. Your writings hold a persons interest right away…better than any first pages of most books.

Yes, you ARE the writer! …What a wonderful friend — is he okay now? You might be interested in reading a book that Sumner just gave us: Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander. He is a highly accomplished neurosurgeon who was the typical skeptical scientist – still is a scientist – but had a near death experience himself that transformed him. Really fascinating….

  3. xxRob: Awakenings! Transformative moments: seeing the smell of blue skies; the sound of the smile of a cherished friend; the touch of re-living a memory of a deep midnight sky with the singing/stinging stars and the taste of JOY! They are Beethoven’s NINTH Symphony.

They are the anam cara recognition of finding a resonant soul that can skates on the surface and then has the capacity to dive into the amplitude of the soul. They are the Jane Mattesons and the Dr. Mark B. Coventrys of my life, and the life forces I meet who are the response to the call of my gospel song that rushes like a river…quietly and suddenly their presences sound forever.

    ALWAYS,
