Alzheimers

December 27, 2014

My brother Rick shared with me the visual idea of how Alzheimer’s victims respond to music from the past…

Something I had read about a year ago in the New York Times…..

It was odd but I have been bingeing on Netflix films this weekend….

was hooked on the Spanish (Catalan?) “The Gran Hotel”….a soap opera that lasts for 40 hours…

(in all honesty) I started to watch it several months ago…as the beauty of the female star Amaia Salamanca …now 28…reminds me SOO of my Niece Laura…..

they share not only the same beauty but the SAME olive shaped eyes…..

And Yon Gonzalez…is VERY pretty on the eyes…he was born in the Basque area…is also 28…..

Gran Hotel is set in the early 1900’s…

filmed at Palacio de la Magdalenalace built in 1908 as a residence for the Royal Family….

I am a romantic..a “Falling Leaves” Guy and got hooked by it….

I also have been bingeing on a Danish seires … Crime Reporter…”Dicte”….all with subtitles…

but I have realized if you watch subtitles you concentrate more…

watch more of the movie..as YOU Have to …in order to follow the plot

But there is one scene in “Dicte”…where she is walking down a path…

and the wind was rustling through the trees…

which took me back… to when I sat alone (50 plus years ago)… in a kind of depression..as one goes through when one transits through the testosterone growing years..

on a rock off the picnic point at our summer house on Burgundy Point…

I would be staring across the water toward…”Champagne Island”…..

the birch trees behind me would begin to rustle….

I have to say that my music DOES bring back such memories…

as does scent…but unless it is intense will not work on me..as once I had my deviated septum fixed…I lost like 90% of my smell…..which in one way is good as I don’t smell the offensive scents that emanate unexpectedly….

But the scent of lilacs will always take me back to my early days at out weekend house in the Blue Ridge Mountains…as we had a bush that was Huge…and was like 100 year old…

The sound of thunder a rain storm………………

The sound of a motor boat……in the evening …crossing Lake Namekagon….a sound I would like to go back and record…but I don’t think anyone has the simple motors of yesterday…..

So yes Rick…I Totally Agree with you….it will make me momentarily Happy and bring back my memory…

I hope to Hell I never get Alzheimer’s which we Baby Boomer are confronted by..

As Mom use to say…just get one of my long dresses in its dry cleaning bags out of my closet…

Give me a kiss…

and PLEASE ……throw the bag “forgetfully” over me……..
