The Empire in My Life….the Boardwalk

January 3, 2015

The Info sign on the freeway said:

“Accident – 2 Left Lanes Closed – Atlantic Avenue”

We had no idea where Atlantic Avenue was….and kept looking around…wondering…..

was that sign meant for us???

About 15 minutes later the traffic grinded to a tail light red halt….and then crept forward at a snail’s pace…..

It ALWAYS seems like FOREVER…..

when you are trying to get somewhere…

we had to return the rental car by noon…

We passed a stalled truck…

hood up…on the right shoulder….

passed “Atlantic Avenue”….

and still crept forward until…there was a gradual increase of speed…and we were free…making one wonder what was that all about……….

But “Atlantic Avenue” made me think about the Boardwalk at Bethany Beach on the Atlantic coast….where I use to spend my childhood summers with the family….

the smell of freshly made donuts wafting down the walk…….every morn as we awoke….

Which made me think of my Gorgeous roommate who is a star and appeared in Boadwalk Empire…

is leaving soon for a Fabulous New chapter in her life as a costar in “The Mysteries Of Laura” with Debra Messing….

I am so blessed by having known her for two years….and her extremely handsome partner…who is finishing up a script which will soon be made into a Brilliant Film…..

“Boardwalk” made me think of clams which made me think of France which made me think of Escargot….which then made me think of mussels…..

so I made a bee line down to my “Idiot” (local pub) …after dumping Rita at his house…

for garlic brothy sodded mussels..…

it was so wonderful to see all the old familiar faces…..that I have known for so many years now……

to find out how Carlos’s 5 year old son’s New Years was….

and the other children and mates of the staff are………….

I had without a doubt the Best New Years Eve

pre and aft days…EVER…. down in Palm Springs which was only 3 degrees above freezing at night….
.
New Years eve was spent with friends and “family” now of 30 some years….

Nabil, Jeff, James and I were on the dance floor as the bewitching hour of 2 fell and they turned up the lights and said “Last Call”……

at a new bar and dance place “Chill”….

in my mind Jim was out there dancing …twirling his cane to the disco beat…..taking me back to when I met him in 1969…when he was my uncle’s lover…………….

I spent the weekend at wonderful Ron’s house….he is the “salt of the earth”….who does so much for everyone….I love and appreciate him dearly…..

last night we were able to join the “Boozey Bunch” that he was instrumental in setting up…it is this wonderful group of guys who get together ever Friday night for cocktails…..there are anywhere from 20-40 of them….

One reads so much about how sad it is that as one progresses down the path of age…one loses more and more friends until one sits all alone in their room…..

Well NOT with this group who age from 35-80….Life with them is Always a Cabaret…..as Liza sang:

“What good is sitting alone in your room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.

No use permitting some prophet of doom
To wipe every smile away.
Come hear the music play.”

Well these guys LIVE!!!

It was so wonderful to see so many familiar faces…to be able to chat with them albeit briefly….
.
so many come like Ron and I do from the Wonderful ….Midwest….which has always had its unique handle on the paddle of Life

After we boozed with the Boozey Bunch we motored out to join Nabil, Jeff, James, Troy, and John…at “Shame On the Moon” for dinner..

..which was another very special moment for me…as I have met Troy and John before…but never have had a chance to talk with them

….I was flabbergasted that John has 3 mature children….from his wife of many years ago…and Troy has one by his wife….

they have been together for something like 15 years…compared to the other boozers who have been together for 30 plus…

but then John and Troy are only in their 40’s…..

they are dear men….so much depth behind our facades…..

it was so wonderful as after dinner we all went back to dance at “Chill”………………

My dearest friends gave me as a gift for Christmas – a pillow that says “We Will Always Have Paris”….

which for us is a state of mind as we have never been there together…..

I realized that I have “ALWAYS” had….. in my Life….. the electric energy of The Boardwalk ….

from the sandy laughter as a child racing after the sandpipers on the beaches at Bethany….

til today…dancing my 60’s away….

reveling in the exuberant laughter that falls from Meg’s lips……

Ah yes, Bethany Beach. Rick took us there years ago. And what a special little beach community, somehow still the same as from your childhoods, despite the mega resorts just down the highway. Such an unpretentious place where everybody lines up in the sand and surf whether wearing a gorgeous svelte body, or a not-so-perfect one, young and old. And ah yes – mussels in a briny broth! And… lucky you with such a community of friends.
