He Broke His Neck

June 21, 2017

Mallard’s sight…well I guess all ducks must be Really Fabulous….

As when I got back from the Libe today….the pond which sits a football field away……. when they saw me in the kitchen…they started waddling over to me for dinner (yes I should NOT feed them…but in this heat….118 today with a low of 84…I just can’t imagine foraging for food) and Why they waddle all the way rather than flying I don’t know….

… I mean meat cooks at 165….which might happen some day for all of us……..in my great great Grand  nephews and nieces lives …what with Global Warming…..everyone will have to wear air conditioned fire resistant silver tin foil  suits to go out….no more swimming in lakes or rivers…..no more Burgundy Point or Dreams of Forest Lodge….

I saw for the first time…around the pond two LARGE owls…with white beards…..well they were so far away I really don’t know if they were beards…the only reason I noticed them was when they stretched out their wings to hop around…

they TOTALLY blend into the brown distant foliage…..

For some reason I thought the Mallards would be upset by such Large Birds as they are of Hawks…but no…the ducks would just paddle  by them with no worries…..

One of the owls left the shade of the tree that the two had been sitting under and hopped/flew down to the pond and walked into it …up to his belly button…and drank a lot and bathed himself….and this is when it is 118 out……

I’ve been reading a lot about Somerset Maugham lately….Selina Hasting’s biography is so EXCELLENT….as she gives a TOTAL flavor of homosexuality and Life  back in that period….

It is fascinating to read how gay guys from the UK….where Homosexuality was a crime… would take  a posting to one of Great Britain’s colonies…. say the Far East…. where finding a Gorgeous boy was as easy as picking a daisy by the way side……

by doing this they avoided having to Marry…..which all Men were expected to do…..

And those gay guys that were married…did it also…..later in the 30’s…(WWI changed EVERYTHING)….some of their wives did follow…..as  they were much richer in the colonies   than they had back in the UK…

…they would have like at least 5 servants…

well these wives would not have to cook, clean, or shop for food…so they got EXTREMELY bored of knitting, reading, having lunch together at The Club…. so many would have an affair…..which often ended disastrously….

Somerset was trapped into marriage by Syrie…(as she trapped  her enormously  wealthy first husband the American  pharmaceutical manufacturer…Henry Welcome.. Welcome Bourroughs of today)…and her lover at the time was Gordon Selfridge of the Selfridge Department store …who bought her first house for her…tho she was still married…

Syrie  actually was the fodder of many of his novels and plays…she appears as the male or female object of Maugham’s dislike…whereas his boy friends were usually the females of his desires …see the film that made Bette Davis a star….on Utube…in his great work “Of Human Bondage”…done in the 30’s…Joan Crawford was in the  play turned into a film  “Rain”…which is also on Utube…gosh she looks soo soo sexy back then….

though  he had an American boyfriend (who was Gorgeous but sorta rough trade) Gerald Haxton…

Syrie had purposely gotten  pregnant with Liza….so Maugham did what all Decent British  men did back then …after she refused to have an abortion…Marry her…

But was Extemely unhappy…and would travel for like 6 months to the Orient with Gerald…

Maugham had a terrible stutter so always did not speak much leaving that to Gerald….

Gerald was his major domo….his secretary…the man he idolized

But Gerald became a drunkard…and was addicted to gambling……

Until one day when he stripped off his clothes at a friend’s  luncheon he and Somerset were attending  in the South of France near their Villa Mauresque at Cap Ferrat….

He drunkenly ran and dived into a swimming pool that was only half full…..

He broke his neck
