Magic DOES Exist

February 4, 2018

30 Canadian Geese on the pond… 3 Mallards…and it was a heat  record breaking day of 91…..

I went last night to see probably the Worst (or is it Worse) play I have ever seen …a LGBTQAI production …(I had not heard of the AI that is now added)…it had 7 actors…two gay…one of whom had lost his legs (not in real life but for the play) in I gather Iraq…it wasn’t really explained..as the play wasn’t ….something about a family who had their relative’s ashes in a Whitman Candy Box….

We left at intermission…passed the director with his wonderful scarf and black  sweatpants….he didn’t ask our thoughts and we did not give them…as we motored off into the night…under the waning wonderful moon

Today was a Totally Different story…as I went and saw Kinky Boots that I had seen back in LA…

Well it is TRULy Wonderful…uplifting…funny and Cyndi Lauper’s music is Fabulous….WHAT a difference from last night….and how wonderful to be so moved….

I was in a Box at the McCallum so could look down into the pit…the  orchestra…like 8 members on drums, pianos, violin, trumpet/sax..etc

…but one guy…just moved me to  tears…as he REALLY was INTO the music and the Emotion….

when there was a soft ballad being played, that he did not have to be part of …  he got so   sensually into it… stroking his black velvet shirt very slowly to the music…when the tempo blew up…he was pounding on his electronic piano….snapping his fingers… singing out what they were singing …it was so moving watching him and the actors on the floor above him

…he looked 25 and with that tousled curly brown hair..was Soo Handsome…reminded me of Timothee Chalamet in “Call Me By Your Name”

He  Truly loved what he was doing….unaware that anyone could see him or would want to watch him in the pit….

The first drag queen I knew was “Freida”…at the Garden District that Nicky Nichols owned in West Hollywood…he was a lover of my Uncle Sumner….who had backed the restaurant….which was one of the two “THE” Gay restaurants in West Hollywood  back in the 70’s..80’s….I think the Garden was more popular….it was small…but ALWAYS packed….and Man on  Easter it was just packed …I was always totally Amazed at the hats the guys would come up with…nothing like Gay guys for talent and taste….

Freida…(his real name was Warren)…was the head bartender….and man one of the most wonderful men I have ever met in my early 20’s…Freida was like 50 …well maybe only in his 40’s….as 30 seemed old to me back then…..

Freida Always Had the Best advice for us younger gay men….he had a Deep voice…and was a Big man..but WOW when he got in Drag…you fell in Love with his feminine side

….he was just Gorgeous….he did an annual event with drag queens at the Hollywood Palladium…that was always sold out…where he did a judging contest of the drags….the only thing was that it dragged on and on…past midnight …as these drag queens took forever to get their act together due either to alcohol or drugs or being too particular with their dresser….or all three…

(to understand my feeling about the play today and Freida…. listen to “Soul Of A Man” from “Kinky Boots”…you will want to just get up and dance…….)

It was a memory that I will always treasure…as I told a friend of mine…who said well back then  if I had done this….I would have…

I said Well You DIDN’T and look at how your Life has Turned out so Magical….No one has what you have had….(except possibly me…)

So as Freida would say “Accept Reality…but live in Magic…as it DOES Exist!!!”
