Stand By Me

May 21, 2018

Wow …What a Week last was…

First I have to say that it looks like my duck days are over…as they (the Welk Assn that leases the golf course) are filling in my pond …due to cost…  no pond in PS is natural…as this is the Desert…and there is a  water shortage

This all happened about 2 months ago when a large diseased  limb fell into the pond due to the earthquake we had here

I had been watching the progress about a month ago of a family of 9 ducklings that dwindled to 5 as of Saturday….the family has shrunk as has the pond….which does sadden me….

The family did not appear today but then I have not been home….but the 3 Amigos I have always seen did come up from what remains of the pond…but man do they look bedraggled…as they are molting…and then my favorite lesbian duck as usual flew in with a LOT of noise and a male chasing her…her hair/feathers always look gelled and out of normal sorts… she Never can appear silently or without creating a scene….

This past weekend was a moment of different experiences…

I HAD to get up at 2 AM (yeah no sleep) to watch the start of the Royal Wedding….

I watched back in 1981…Charles and Diana marrying…on the phone from the West Coast to my Mom in DC…we were spellbound…but of course back then one did not have any coverage but that done by the BBC

I thought it Very Moving…

The song “Stand By Me” created by Ben and Stephen King…has Always been one of my favorites…..the Gospel choir…the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason….moved me to tears and such Happiness

.what  made me smile was Elton John kissing David Beckham on the lips when they met in the Chapel…..as this sort of set the precedent for me that it would be such a different wedding from Charles and Di…

Some people said that Victoria Beckham must have been confused by what kind of service she was attending as she wore black (some said Navy Blue)…and NEVER smiled…others said that is the Way she made her statement…and WAS  noticed….

Others complained that David B chewed gum throughout the ceremony….

Most everyone Loved Amal Clooney’s dress..though a few did not like the color…a yellow..mustard??…or I don’t know what… I thought she looked the BEST and Happiest  of the whole lot….People pointed out that George C walked “Pigeon toed”….

Serena looked absolutely Fabulous…Oprah people said looked kind of dumpy….

I Totally loved the whole shebang…tho felt sorry for her Mom…and wondered why she could not have brought a girlfriend….but she looked Radiant

I went back to bed at 6 AM….

And then that night..went to a Very Interesting Documentary …a newly unreleased film about Kaye Ballard…who I loved back in the day…but did Not know that much about…

It was held at the Palm Springs Cultural Center …it was Excellent…Kaye was/is such an amazing singer/actress/comedian/flute player..well many instruments…I Never knew as I only saw her primarily as a comedian on “Hollywood Squares”…way back then…….Peter Marshall who was the MC of the show and WAS in the audience in PS said…the reason Kaye was not a success …was she refused to lie/bluff…and one had to ..to make the show successful..

My dear friend Jim Terry’s friends Gavin and Patty MacCleod were in attendance and Kaye pointed out that it was Patty who made Gavin give up cigarettes and liquor 30 years ago….

We (Jim, Anthony, dear Robert and I …such Wonderful People) …left on a high….the event was sold out…..

Kaye answered questions at the end…she is 94 or 92…but just amazing…and there were many a people over 90 there …which made me realize I just make it that Far….I mean the 90’s are the new 70’s…

The one thing that kind of upset me was that Kaye said she had done the documentary to help younger kids…well as the wonderful Paul  and I said…if she had talked about her Lesianism it would REALLY help those younger…as when she was at her peak she DID NOT get the jobs …the leads…because first She is a Woman and Second a Lesbian……but then people brought up back then like my Uncle Sumner would Never talk about their sexuality….especially if one was Gay…as it just was a “sickness”…and no “normal” family talked about it…Gay guys were referred to as “bachelor”…gay women got a lesser nice sentence ..they were “spinsters”…old maids

So we just hope she adds another chapter to her doc…

And then Sunday I went with my usual CV Rep Theatre group…there are like 10 of us to their last show of the season…it was billed as an “Uproarious” Comedy…well it was NOT…for me…

Which made me realize once again how different we all are…I mean in the theatre there were Many who could not stop laughing….whereas I could not get out a chuckle….

It was  a play about two people who met on the SF Bart from the airport to where it ends near Oakland…and there would be the announcement over the PA system at what station they were approaching….this straight couple like fall into Love…..

I kept watching to see Who in the audience fell asleep….I watched the subway/Bart map from the Airport to its terminus….hoping as it approached its End… that there would NOT be an intermission and the subway would make its way back to the airport….fortunately the play ended after it reached its end…

Paul described the play as “Trite”…which I agreed with….

Talking of differences…( I mean as a child I thought we would all grow together…no racists…no inequality)…I talked to my dear older sister last night…she is 5 years my senior…and had a knee op several months ago and is dealing with the rehab now

What I had NO idea was that she was as fascinated by the Royal Wedding…as I was…

Back when Charles and Di got married and I was exhilarating over it with me Mum on my landline (the only communication that existed then)

…I believe she (my sister)  was bouncing on Large rubber balls with one of her bi-racial lovers….(sorry D…you have Always led an exotic life)…oh which reminds me that I heard today on BBC London …that the Pastry Chef for the Royal Lemon whatever cake was probably someone You….. knew…as she was the Pastry Chef at Chez Panisse in Berkley in 2005 …”Ptak”..and owns a Fabulous bakery in London called “Violet”

my sister and her Fabulous husband Dave Donnelley  were two of the original backers of Chez Panisse back in the early 70’s…..

Life is so Wonderful…Kaye was asked several times …HOW she coped with depression at Not attaining the roles she so so Wanted….

She would alway pause…and answer like it was a Crazy Question

“Well the rent had to be paid….”

meaning one had no time for being depressed….

(sigh!!!)…..
