Clickety-Clack….Clickety-Clack…Clickety-Clack

July 17, 2018

Clickety-Clack,  Clickety-Clack, Clickety-Clack…..the train sang across the rails of North Dakota….on the Empire Chief….the Great Northern Railroad of which my grandfather was Secretary-Treasurer…

He had been with J J Hill when he had started to lay the rails years before across the Midwest heading to Seattle…..

Clickety-Clack,   Clickety-Clack, Clickety-Clack  …we swayed unsteadily as we walked through three cars on our way to the Dining Car….

The Wonderful white-gloved porters smiling at us….Clickety-Clack, Clickety-Clack, Clickety-Clack…the Dining Car…white linen table cloths and napkins…flowers on the table in a cut crystal vase….

My grandfather ordered a Bourbon and Gingerale…..as the pianist  at the end of the car was playing a Cole Porter song….people sitting around on bar stools sipping their cocktails…..

Clickety-Clack, Clickety-Clack, Clickety-Clack as I pulled down the nightshade in my berth….. the nightlite glowing blue…..(I had Never seen a blue light)…comforting…reassuring…….peaceful

Beautiful description, Rob – brought back memories of riding the Great Northern with my family when my father worked there…
